The group was formed in the year 2000 when a small number of residents got together to raise funds for the repair to the preaching cross on the village green High Ackworth. The cross, which is a listed monument, had been vandalised. After raising funds the cross was restored in 2002. As a result of the fund raising activities the interest in Ackworth, its history, buildings and activities increased and the numbers of people involved grew and this led to the ambition of greater involvement of the community. To do this a programme of lectures was instigated in 2004 and this continues with the monthly meeting being attended by seventy or more people.
